Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: What would you do if you fractured your hip tomorrow? How will you drive to the store, or grab coffee with friends? How will you get out of bed or go to the bathroom? Do you have someone to help you make your meals or help you bathe? What will you do if you lose your mobility and independence?
The problem is bigger than you think. Approximately 54 million Americans have low bone density. That’s half of all Americans over age 50.
As humans, we lose 1-2% of our bone density every year after the age of 50.(1,2 )The sad truth is that nearly every single person on earth will experience bone density issues at some point in his or her lifetime.
Bone density issues are tricky. Unlike other problems in your body, they come on silently and seemingly without notice. You could do everything right: exercise regularly, eat healthy foods, get plenty of sleep, then take one wrong step and boom! You have a broken hip.
And you’d never know you were in danger either, because unless you’ve taken a bone density test, you’ll have no idea.
Lauren Cornell: My post-menopausal patients come in freaking out that they're facing falls, breaks and the agony and lack of independence, which go along with those.
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: The stories are all too common. My patients tell me they just took a wrong step, tripped over something in a parking lot, or were out walking the dog when they took a fall. They end up breaking their hip or pelvis just doing these simple, everyday things. They’re completely blindsided and find themselves hobbling into an orthopedists office hoping for a miracle.
One out of every two women and one out of every four men will fracture a bone after age 50.(3 )No one expects it. I can't tell you how many times I've heard things like, "I never thought it would happen to me. I've been healthy my entire life up until now. I exercise regularly and take calcium and vitamin D. I thought I was protected. Why me?"
Lauren Cornell: You just don't expect to break a bone walking down your front steps, but it happens. It happens every single day.
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: And the emotional toll can be devastating. People become less independent, which puts a strain on their family members, as well as their finances. Many worry they won’t be able to drive, will be less active, and will end up more reliant on other people.
Lauren Cornell: When one of my older patients breaks a bone, they're stunned by the amount of help they need. It's overwhelming. They can't go to the bathroom. They can't get out of bed. They can't get dressed without help. They need constant assistance with these things. The lack of independence and mobility can be devastating.
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: The fact of the matter is that half of all women and a quarter of all men over 50 will break a bone due to low bone density. (3) From there it just gets worse. Because 50% of older adults who break a hip will never fully recover. 10% will end up in a nursing home. And 33% will die within a year. (5,6)
Lauren Cornell: A lot of my patients end up closed off emotionally. They're less active, feel like they're a burden. They're stuck their houses just watching TV. It's no way to live.
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg MD: I’ve witnessed many, many patients’ health deteriorate quickly after a serious fall and fracture. The fact of the matter is... our bodies take longer to recover from fractures as we age. It can take 6 months to a year of rehabilitation to get back to normal, although many never do.
A lot of my patients come in saying they don’t want the traditional treatments. They’ve heard horror stories from friends or family, or even read about them online. It’s frustrating as a doctor to watch patient after patient come in with the very same issues. There just hasn’t been a good overall solution for bone density issues.

Let’s start with one of the most popular treatments on the market, calcium supplements.
Today, calcium supplements have become a billion dollar industry. (7) But the truth of the matter is that many options on the market are extremely low quality. They’re basically capsules filled with ground-up rocks, usually limestone.(8)
Your body wasn’t made to digest rock, so the calcium in these supplements gets excreted by your body as waste, failing to deliver any benefits. In fact, x-rays have shown that low-quality “rock” calcium can remain in your gut undigested for hours. (9)
The most common forms of calcium in supplements — calcium carbonate and calcium citrate — require lots of stomach acid to digest. This means very little calcium is actually absorbed by your body, so it doesn’t make it to your bones where it’s needed. (10, 11)
But that’s not all, common calcium supplements have also been linked to a plethora of side effects. The wrong calcium supplement, calcium carbonate, for example, can cause symptoms like severe diarrhea, constipation, abdominal cramps, kidney stones, nausea, vomiting, gas, bloating, constipation, fatigue, and frequent urination.(12)
Making matters worse, if this calcium doesn’t make it to your bones, it can build up in your arteries. (13)
Dr Hogne Vik MD: So in the past we have given the medical advice to men and women to take more calcium as you get older in order to stay with healthy bone. But in fact, that has been more or less a poison.
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: Not only are your bones getting weaker, but this buildup narrows the pathways in your arteries, restricting blood flow to your vital organs like your heart. To put it another way, your clogged arteries start turning into rock, unable to adequately support blood flow throughout your body. This process is called arterial calcification. (14, 15)
These narrow, hardened arteries directly lead to increased risk for heart problems. In fact, research suggests that arterial calcification is one of the best indicators of risk for heart-related incidents.(16, 17) And since someone in America dies of cardiovascular issues every 37 seconds, its connection to bone health should be on everyone’s radar.(18)
But that’s not all.
That brings me to my next common solution out there — Strontium, an ingredient in many so-called “advanced” bone health supplements today. Once considered the next best thing for increased bone density, new research has come to light showing it’s actually quite problematic. In diagnostic tests, Strontium appears to increase bone density. But it turns out that Strontium is a heavier element than Calcium, so while a scan may appear to show density improvement, no bone growth actually occurs. (19)
Worse, Strontium has been found to carry dangerous side effects, including increased risk for heart problems and blood clots. The concern is so severe that the European market is trying to ban it completely. And while it’s not approved for use by the FDA in the U.S., Strontium is still widely available in the supplement market. (20)
Other traditional treatments, even some recommended by doctors, simply cannot rebuild bone that's been lost. At best, they can slow the rate of density loss. At worst, these solutions have serious side effects such as bone damage, blood clots, and worse. (21,22)
Some of these options are so dangerous that doctors recommend taking “treatment breaks” from them. (23) So here you are dedicating time to recovering from the treatment you’re taking for bone density issues.
On top of that, these treatments can be extremely expensive. (24) So many of my patients struggle to deal with the financial commitments required of these therapies. Also, the lack of independence after a fracture may lead people to a stint in rehabilitation or a skilled nursing facility, where they end up living for a month or more. (25)
Lauren Cornell: It's brutal. Many of my patients admit themselves to a rehabilitation facility for months on end because they just can't take care of themselves. I’ve been treating patients for bone mineral density issues for years, and after seeing thousands of people suffering from the same problems, I knew I had to do something.
So, let’s take a closer look at your bones so I can show you what’s going on in your body.
The adult human body has a lot of bones, 206 to be exact.(26)
You might think bones are kind of like rocks — they’re hard and white and solid-looking, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. Your bones are actually alive!(27) What? I know! It seems like nonsense, but it’s true. And they regenerate throughout your lifetime so you have a whole new skeleton every 7-10 years. (28)
As you get older, around 50, you start losing bone density every year.(1,2) This is regardless of your lifestyle, diet, gender, or ethnicity.
Take a look at these. Do you know which one of these represents your bones right now? This one has low bone density and this one is normal. So which do you think would be more likely to break if you took a fall? This one, right? I'm showing you this because your bones could very well look like this right now.
Why is this happening? Well, throughout your life, you’ve got a little band of construction professionals constantly working on making your bones stronger. The head honchos or “osteocytes” constantly check your bones for damage from wear and tear. (29)
This could be caused by anything — hitting a baseball, taking a jog, or knocking your wrist on a cabinet.
Once they notice an issue, your osteocytes send out 2 sets of workers to repair these problems. The first set, the osteoclasts, or bone destroyers break apart layers of your bone, removing anything old or worn out. (29)
Next, the osteoblasts, or “bone creators,” fix the damage with fresh new bone material. Injury or not, this process constantly goes on throughout your lifetime. This is called bone remodeling, and it’s how you get a new skeleton every 7-10 years.(29)
When you get older, things go awry with the worker cells in your bones. Your osteoblasts can’t keep up with your osteoclasts. This means your bones’ construction crew is ripping up the bone, but not repairing it as quickly. This could be due to menopause, or decreased testosterone in men, but to put it simply, this renewal process actually slows as we age, causing our bones to get thinner. (30)
Some of the most interesting research into bone density comes from an unlikely source — space. That's right, NASA, who puts rovers on Mars, launches rockets to different galaxies, and transports astronauts into space got their galactic hands on the bone density question. Why?
When astronauts are in space, they lose about 1-2% of their bone density every month.(31) Compare that to us earthbound humans losing 1-2% of their bone density every year, and that's a serious problem.
NASA needed solutions. They teamed up with many of the top research institutions in the world and astronauts performed bone density testing in space! (31)
Lauren Cornell: It's so cool to think that when I was a little girl, these famous astronauts were out in space doing amazing testing on bone density.
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: They found that diet plays an integral role in bone density, which opened the door for future bone health treatments, many of which are in clinical testing right now. Their findings inspired my solution. (31)
So now let’s talk about what you can do for low bone density. Well, I commonly recommend weight-bearing exercise to my patients. According to the FDA, physical activity is associated with reduced risk of osteoporosis. (32)
It’s the same concept as space travel. In space, there’s no gravity and therefore less pressure on your bones. The construction crew in your body recognizes this and automatically adjusts the reshaping process to give you the bone density you need, which is significantly lower than that of us earthbound humans.
The same concept, but opposite, applies to consistent weight bearing exercises, like climbing stairs, hiking, aerobics, dancing, or tennis. With these exercises, you’re putting additional pressure on your bones. Your body recognizes this added pressure and thus the need for more density. So, your bone construction crew responds accordingly and gets to work adding density. Interestingly, this is why people with more body mass tend to have stronger bones. Their bones need more density to support the additional weight.
Lauren Cornell: I typically tend to start talking to my patients, particularly women, about bone health and bone density after the age of 50. The first thing I'm going to look at is just their diet. What are they eating? Where are their nutrients coming from? Are they coming from foods? Are they coming from nutritional supplements? Are they getting enough food sources of vitamin D and calcium specifically?
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: Bone broth is a great adjunct to add, usually with chicken or beef bones. It’s also best to avoid smoking, high amounts of caffeine, alcohol, soft drinks, steroid medications, seizure medications, and acid reflux medications.
And of course I also recommend calcium, but calcium is tricky. Lots of calcium supplements on the market are extremely low quality. They’re often just powdered rock, usually limestone or marble.
Your body can't digest rocks, so it sits in your gut undigested for hours, and finally is excreted as waste. Most importantly, this means the low quality calcium doesn’t make it to your bones. (9)
The calcium I do recommend, Calcium Hydroxyapatite, is the optimal choice for your calcium supplement. But even the best quality Calcium Hydroxyapatite won’t do much good if you don’t combine it with Vitamin D. That’s another thing most calcium supplements don’t include. You absolutely must have Vitamin D to direct the calcium where it needs to go — your bones. Calcium and Vitamin D don’t build bone, but combined together with weight-bearing exercise and healthy eating, they can help.
But even if you do all of the above — calcium, vitamin D, weight-bearing exercise, bone broth, and healthy habits, — it’s not enough to stop bone density problems.
So I dug deeper.

Then the people eating that food had less fractions and less problems with cardiovascular diseases than other people in Japan. So when we arrived to Hovdebygda, then Neil asked me, "What do you think of that?" I said, "It's a very interesting story, but just forget about it. This will have nothing to do with Norway. Nobody here will eat this rotten soybeans."
And then Neil said to me, "Hogne, again, you have misunderstood everything, because we are not going to import these rotten soybeans. We are going to make a powder and extract the vitamin K2 too from that powder, and then this will be something."
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: Dr. Vik’s development turned out to be the first ingredient 1MD and I discovered on our path to the perfect bone health supplement. Dr Hogne Vik, MD: ...unfortunately the diet we have today contain close to zero K2 vitamins. In the past before refrigerators, before the modern time when we have cooled down everything for eating, they stored food in a special way in room temperature and secure that it wasn't rotten.
And during that storage period there were healthy bacteria that were in fermentation making vitamin K2. And if you then go 50, 60, 70 years back, most people in Europe and in the US got sufficient amounts of K2 through normal diet. Today it's only the food. I talked about, the rotten soybeans in Japan with a high amount of vitamin K2. One daily serving represents around 1000 microgram per day. And what we recommend and have done clinical trials on is one fifth of that, 180 to 200 microgram.
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: So, Nattopharma created a targeted and effective version of MK-7, nature-identical MenaQ7® PharmaPure MK-7.

Lauren Cornell: Ironically in Southern California where we have sunny weather almost year round, we also have quite a bit of vitamin D deficiency maybe because of sunscreen use.
Dr. Adam Kreitenberg, MD: As a powerful companion to vitamin K2, Vitamin D3 increases intestinal absorption of calcium. (41) Then the K2 takes over, directing that calcium to your bone.
This is incredibly important. It means that the calcium gets directed to your bones and not your arteries.
But Vitamin D3 does a whole lot more.
Vitamin D3 also improves muscle strength, helps with coordination, and reduces the risk for falls, the primary cause of bone density-related injuries. (42)
Studies show proper amounts of D3 not only reduce falls and fractures by 20%, but supplementation has proven more effective than hip protectors. (43)
But we didn’t forget one of the most important nutrients: calcium.
Calcium is extremely important. According to the FDA, calcium and vitamin D as part of a well-balanced diet may reduce the risk of osteoporosis. (44)
Unfortunately, as I mentioned earlier, a lot of the calcium on the market is extremely low quality. It surprises my patients when I tell them that they’re basically eating rocks.
If you’re taking either calcium carbonate or calcium citrate, these are very low quality calcium which require lots of stomach acid to digest. Very little calcium is actually absorbed by your body, meaning it doesn’t make it to your bones where it’s needed.
But that’s not all.
Too much calcium intake especially in older adults can lead to cardiovascular issues in the future. (34)Excess or poor quality calcium has also been linked to an array of side effects, including severe diarrhea, kidney stones, vomiting and fatigue, just to name a few.(12) New research has come to light showing that too much calcium intake or poor quality calcium can lead to hardened arteries and a slew of other problems. (14,15)
